People with TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, disorder typically experience pain or stiffness in their jaw, ears, and neck. TMJ disorder is caused by damage or wear and tear to the temporomandibular joint, which is used directly in actions such as eating and talking—really any motion requiring control of your jaw position. Excessive teeth grinding (also called Bruxism), arthritis, an improper bite, and even chewing too much gum are some of the actions that could cause this type of damage to your temporomandibular joint.
In addition to the common symptoms of pain and stiffness, other symptoms of TMJ disorder could include: swelling in the jaw region (possibly ear and temple regions as well), tinnitus (ringing or clicking sounds in the ear), toothaches, uncomfortable feeling while biting or chewing, locked jaw, and popping or clicking of the jaw or surrounding regions. Keep reading to learn about some of the treatments that have available to help you with your TMJ problems.
Our Treatments
A very common method of reducing TMJ pain is to use a mouthguard or oral splint, which are devices that separate your upper and lower teeth with a soft and shock-absorbing material. Splints fit over your upper or lower teeth, and maintain a healthy joint position; stabilization splints are the most common treatments for TMJ disorders. We can also utilize crowns and bridges to help create a correct bite; these work by distributing your bit pressure more evenly across your teeth. We hope that this information helped you learn more about TMJ disorder, and some of the treatment options available.
