Crown Materials & Placement

An example of a dental crown, it's material & placement at the Wanserski Dental Center for Complex Dentistry in Wausau, WIDental crowns are an effective solution for restoring the appearance and function of damaged teeth. The crown, or cap, fits over the prepared tooth, covering its visible surfaces to protect and strengthen it. Crowns are commonly used to restore cracked or broken teeth, support existing restorations, cover misshapen or discolored teeth, or enclose dental implants. We invite you to visit the Wanserski Dental Center for Complex Dentistry to learn more about how crowns can improve your oral health and smile.

Crown Materials

Our practice specializes in three durable and aesthetically pleasing crown materials:

Gold Crowns:

Known for their durability and biocompatibility, gold crowns are highly resistant to chipping and wear. They require minimal removal of natural tooth structure and are an excellent choice for back molars where strength is essential.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns:

These crowns combine a metal core with a porcelain exterior, offering both strength and a natural appearance. They have been a reliable option for over 50 years. While they blend well with natural teeth, a dark line at the gumline may sometimes be visible, and the porcelain surface can chip over time. PFM crowns are suitable for both front and back teeth.

Zirconia Crowns:

An increasingly popular choice, zirconia crowns provide the strength of metal along with the natural look of porcelain. They are highly resistant to chipping and fractures and are completely metal-free, making them ideal for patients with metal sensitivities. Adjusting zirconia crowns can be more challenging, but their durability and aesthetics make them a top option.

Crown Placement Process

The procedure for placing a crown generally follows these steps:

•  Preparation: The tooth is carefully shaped to ensure a proper fit for the crown.
•  Impression: An impression is taken to create a custom crown that fits precisely.
•  Temporary Crown: A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated.
•  Fabrication: The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom crown is made.
•  Final Placement: During a follow-up appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented into place.

With proper oral hygiene, dental crowns can last up to 15 years or more. To ensure their longevity and your optimal oral health, it’s important to have your crown placed by an experienced, skilled dental professional.
