Gold Crowns Have Some Benefits - Find Out More

Gold Crowns Have Some Benefits – Find Out MoreTooth crowns are commonly used to help repair and protect teeth that have suffered from breaking or decay. It is possible to get a crown made in a wide variety of materials including porcelain, ceramic, resin, chromium, and gold.

Each material has different benefits from durability to aesthetics. A common misconception about gold crowns is that they are older technology therefore outdated, but gold crowns do have many benefits compared to the other material often used in crowns.

Benefits of a Gold Crown

One thing many people are worried about when having dental procedures done is cost. Compared to other material used for crowns, gold is oftentimes, the cheapest solution. The cost of a gold crown can often be reduced by implementing a gold alloy crown which consists of gold and another metal. Gold alloy crowns, while cheaper, may also be more durable than plain gold crowns depending on the secondary metal used to create the alloy.

Another benefit of gold crowns is their extended durability compared to other crown material like porcelain of ceramic. Since gold is a malleable material that can more easily take a beating from things like food and teeth clenching, it may be a better option for a crown than brittle materials like porcelain and ceramic. These brittle materials also do not have as long of a life as gold on average. With proper care, gold crowns can last more than ten years.

Some people may be worried about the appearance of gold in their mouth but depending on the location of the tooth getting the crown, it may be unnoticeable. If the tooth getting the crown is a molar further back in your mouth, it is unlikely it will be noticed. Also, gold crowns can be differing shades of gold. Gold alloy crowns are often a more silvery color which could make them less noticeable.
