What Are the Three Types of Dental Implants?

Posted on 3/15/2024 by Dr. David Wanserski

Over time, the post will fuse with your existing jawbone and create a good foundation for teeth restoration. This tooth restoration method is a durable replacement for your lost teeth. It is popular since it fuses with the existing bone and works similarly to a tooth root. Over time, it stimulates and helps preserve your jawbone structure. There are three types of dental implants that we offer, and they include:

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are quite common and are placed directly on your jawbone. They mimic the look and shape of your natural teeth roots and are placed on the jawbone to offer a secure foundation for artificial teeth. Some examples of endosteal implants include all-on-four implants and implant-supported dentures.

Subperiosteal Dental Implants

If you have insufficient bone density, we can recommend the use of subperiosteal implants. These implants are not placed directly on your jawbone but below the gumline and on top of your bone. They are made up of a metal frame anchored on your jawbone using small posts that will protrude through your gumline to offer adequate support to your prosthetic teeth.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are the ideal solution for you if you have severe bone loss, especially on your upper jaw. These implants are not anchored on your jawbone but on the zygomatic bones, also known as cheekbones, to offer support on dentures or bridges. These implants are placed on your cheekbones, making them suitable if you have missing teeth on your upper dental arch. You can consider subperiosteal implants or bone grafts if your lower jaw has insufficient bone mass.

If you have missing teeth, we can recommend these three types of implants: endosteal, subperiosteal, or zygomatic. We can recommend the best alternative depending on your needs and bone density.
