Full dentures and/or removable partials are one way to replace missing teeth. If you are missing all of your teeth on the upper or lower dentures are probably an option. While removable dentures and/or partials are an option for some people, they do not give you the stability that a fixed appliance like implants or a fixed bridge can provide. Fabrication of removable appliances requires a series of appointments which include impressions, tooth selection, try-ins, insertion and often times adjustments to relieve sore spots post insertion. Removable appliances also require follow-up maintenance appointments to have them professionally cleaned, along with a yearly oral cancer screening.

It is usually necessary to reline or remake removable appliances after a period of 3-5 years, or if one loses a lot of weight, which can also affect the fit.

Tips for adjusting to your new denture:

Practice reading and speaking out loud until your tongue gets used to the denture
Be prepared for extra saliva for the first few weeks until your mouth adjusts to the new appliance
Eat soft foods at first to get used to eating with the denture in place
Clean your dentures with a special denture brush and denture cleaner
Line the sink basin with a washcloth or fill it with water while cleaning, this will help to avoid chipping of the appliance should you drop it while cleaning
See your dentist if your denture needs adjusting, never attempt to adjust your denture on your own
